Volunteering is a rewarding and fulfilling experience in which people give of themselves to make a positive impact on others. No formal qualifications are required for most of our volunteer positions, just a warm and willing heart, a cheerful nature and a few hours of your time.
For many residents, the volunteers provide important opportunities for socialisation, company and just that ‘someone to talk to’.
Volunteers come from all walks of life and backgrounds, and bring with them a great deal of life experiences, special skills and qualities. Volunteers may be members of the local community, church groups, schools, pet therapy groups, entertainment groups, ethnic groups, indigenous communities and corporate bodies.
The Volunteers role is to strengthen the ability of the Resident, and sometimes their family, to cope with life and to help them live as fully and richly as possible. Volunteers have the time to listen in an unhurried way and offer a listening ear to the lonely, bored and those, sometimes experiencing feelings of hopelessness and helplessness.
Sometimes Residents feel more comfortable talking to someone who is not emotionally involved such as family and friends.
In some cases the Resident no longer has family or does not have family close by who can visit.
At The Good Shepherd Home we are mindful of the needs of our Volunteers and provide Volunteers with opportunities to meet their goals and aspirations and to develop new skills. Our Volunteers know they are part of a team and that they make vital and significant contributions to the quality of life of our Residents. Volunteers in return receive satisfaction and recognition for a job well done.
Volunteers are supported by the Volunteer Coordinator
