I started AWA in 2018 in response to numerous requests I received to start acting classes for young people again; I was the drama program coordinator at La Luna Youth Arts for ten years and I am currently an actor and training coordinator for TheatreiNQ. I have had over twenty years experience working in youth arts.
AWA runs a six week programme every school term; Juniors [grades 4-6], Middies [grades 7-9] and Seniors [grade 10-12].
The classes focus specifically on acting training for young people – I modify professional actor training exercises for young people and choose age appropriate texts. Each class incorporates voice work, physical theatre work and performance (improvisation, mime and/or text).
AWA does not participate in the Townsville Eisteddfod or offer exam preparation – there are many studios in Townsville that offer this experience – our focus is purely on the craft of acting. While we don’t have specific performing opportunities throughout the year, students of AWA are the first young people to be called upon if TheatreiNQ requires child actors for a production and last year AWA presented a short play at the Townsville City Council’s Carols by Candlelight.
